The creation of perfumes at that time came into vogue and not only perfumers, but also many courtiers had their own "perfume cellars" at home, which allowed them to compose carefully thought-out fragrances, striving to surpass each other in ingenuity and imagination.

The Fragrant Courtyard of Louis XV marked the olfactory revolution: the compositions became more and more refined. Influenced by major perfumers such as Dejean and Fargeon, the so-called "fauve" (animal) perfumes, which originally included 2 - 3 main ingredients or "base notes", were enriched with expensive and complex flower bouquets known as "mille fleurs" (a thousand flowers), which eventually turned into "heart notes". "Top notes", i.e fruit essences and above all "orange blossom water" were already known at that time thanks to the Princess de la Trémoille from Neroli, who gave her name to the famous neroli oil, and were loved by King Louis XV and his favorite, the Marquise de Pompadour.

And in 1743, the king, who, in addition to perfumery, also adored horses, ordered the famous sculptor Guillaume Coustou to decorate his beloved Château de Marly with horse sculptures. After 2 years, the work was completed and two magnificent symmetrical sculptural groups in Carrara marble, depicting rearing horses tamed by charioteers, were installed in front of the castle. Later the sculptures, called Les Chevaux de Marly, were transferred to the Champs Elysees in Paris and then to the Louvre. Currently, Château de Marly is decorated with copies of sculptures.

Guillaume Coustou drew inspiration for his work directly in the royal stables and drew sketches of horses just there and the main "model" was the purebred Arabian stallion Godolphin, presented to Louis XV by the ruler of Tunisia.
